A successful topographic survey starts long before the equipment reaches the site. It begins with the paperwork. Without the correct legal documents, a surveyor is essentially flying blind.
Here is the essential checklist of documents you must provide your surveyor in Tamil Nadu:
1. The Sale Deed
The mother document. This proves your ownership and usually contains a rough schedule of the property’s boundaries and dimensions. However, the dimensions in older sale deeds are often approximated in “links” or “feet” and may contain historical inaccuracies.
2. Patta & Chitta
The Patta is your revenue record. It confirms that the government recognizes you as the owner of that specific survey number and sub-division. The surveyor needs this to verify the exact survey number they are measuring.
3. FMB Sketch (Field Measurement Book)
This is the most critical document for the surveyor. The FMB contains the official geometric shape and measurements of the land according to the government. The surveyor will use these exact measurements to fix your boundaries on the ground.
4. Previous Survey Reports (If Any)
If the land was surveyed previously, providing the old report can help the surveyor identify existing boundary stones or resolve historical disputes faster.
